Casino staff in Macao are experiencing rising stress levels, according to the trade unions findings

The casino workers in Macao are currently experiencing heightened levels of stress, resulting in an uptick in individuals seeking counselling for mental and emotional issues. This increase in stress has been attributed to various factors such as the introduction of new technologies, a rise in guest numbers, and stricter disciplinary regulations. Night shifts, in particular, have proven to be especially challenging, leading to high rates of work fatigue and psychological stress among employees.

Trade Union Response

In response to these challenges, the trade union is advocating for proactive measures to address work-related issues and is encouraging workers to utilize professional counselling services. In the year 2024, the union provided advice or services to over 36,000 individuals, with 229 seeking counselling primarily for work-related concerns. The union's efforts are focused on providing support to casino workers who are facing mounting pressures within the industry.

Underlying Reasons for Stress

It is important to delve deeper into the underlying reasons behind the stress experienced by casino employees. Macao is a hub for casinos, with a significant portion of the population either working in or having connections to the industry. The casino environment can be overwhelming, especially for those who are new to it, as it involves dealing with intense players, strict customer service protocols, and demanding work conditions.

While the introduction of new technologies is intended to streamline processes, it may also contribute to stress if employees are not adequately trained or supported in utilizing these tools effectively. Additionally, working night shifts can disrupt one's natural sleep patterns and lead to feelings of fatigue and psychological strain.

Addressing the Issues

To address these issues, fostering open communication and feedback among employees is crucial. However, it is essential to ensure that feedback sessions do not devolve into platforms for managers to unload criticism, as this can negatively impact employee morale. Instead, feedback should focus on recognizing strengths and areas for improvement, with a clear development plan in place to support employee growth and success.
