CLOSED: Another casino in Europe due to weak management
After more than two decades of operation, Sweden's final casino, Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm, has officially closed its doors.
Following the decision by the Riksdag to shut down state-owned casinos, Svenska Spel received a revised ownership directive from the government on April 24th, resulting in the closure of Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm. Consequently, Svenska Spel has made the decision to permanently close Casino Cosmopol, effective April 25th.
This morning, April 25 2025, all employees were notified of their immediate termination and provided with six months of full salary compensation.
The decision to close Casino Cosmopol stems from its declining profitability and decreasing visitor numbers over the past few years. Despite these challenges, Swedish management failed to acknowledge any operational shortcomings and instead attributed the decline to the increasing popularity of online casinos. In an attempt to mitigate further losses, the casino in Sundsvall was closed in 2020, followed by the closures of the casinos in Gothenburg and Malmö in February 2024, and now the closure of the Stockholm location.
As a result of the ban on all land-based casinos, no one will be permitted to offer cash games. However, tournament poker may still be conducted with a special license. Svenska Spel's online casino remains unaffected, allowing for the continuation of tournaments and cash games as usual.
